Transparent Power Plant Monitoring with the iba System at FPCL

Success Story

After the nationwide blackout in Pakistan on January 9, 2023, which left large parts of the country without power for up to 72 hours, energy producers came under increasing pressure to enhance plant monitoring and to provide verifiable proof of fault-free operations.

FFBL (Fauji Fertilizer Bin Qasim Limited), a leading Pakistani fertilizer manufacturer, operates a power plant at the Port Qasim site in Karachi through its subsidiary FPCL (FFBL Power Company Limited). This power plant supplies electricity both to FFBL’s production facilities and to the public grid. For FPCL, it became clear that a powerful system for continuous data acquisition and analysis was essential to ensure transparent process documentation and to demonstrate reliable plant operation in the event of future incidents.

Implementation with the iba System

FPCL began the implementation of the ibaPDA system with 512 signals and a ibaPDA-PLC-Xplorer interface. Over time, the system was gradually expanded: first to 1,024 signals and an ibaAnalyzer interface to a relational database, later to 2,048 signals and the addition of ibaQPanel and IEC 61850 interfaces. 

A long-term data storage solution was introduced and implemented, featuring  ibaHD-Server and additional ibaPDA clients for distributed analysis. Today, FPCL acquires high sampling rate data from turbines, generators, and auxiliary systems in real time. Operators use ibaQPanel to maintain a clear view of the current plant status, while the ibaHD-Server ensures structured, long-term archiving of all relevant signals.
